MC Melodee Is Trying To Take Hip-Hop All Around the World. Is She Ready Or Not? (Video)

Amsterdam native MC Melodee is a member of the Stones Throw family, having toured Europe with the likes of Oh No and Guilty Simpson as the front-woman of her Hip-Hop Soul outfit, La Melodia. Heads may also recognize her name thanks to her 2012 mixtape Check Out Melodee, which sports appearances from Smif-N-Wessun, Mac Miller, and others. In the years since, she’s logged collaborations with the Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown, AG of D.I.T.C., Illa J, Chuck Inglish, and more. All of that international flavor has led to her latest project, Passport Pimpin, produced entirely by longtime collaborators Cookin Soul.

What sets this LP apart from much of her previous work is that she is standing alone as an MC, with no features to speak of. The latest video off the project is for “Up & Down,” an undeniably head-bobbin’ affair that showcases her lyrical dexterity atop production that’ll make any true school fan vibe along. Shot in Valencia, Spain, the video features Melodee in a classic J Dilla tee, but she provides a fresh face and take on a sound created so many miles away.
