Token Releases An Explosive And Powerful Music Video About The Effects Of Bullying

Token has made his struggles with a learning disability well known, sharing with his fans that there was a time when anxiety, depression, obesity, and a learning disability once controlled his life. Though he continues to struggle with some of those elements today, he’s managed to not only launch a promising career as an MC, but also make it hard to believe he ever had difficulty expressing himself. By now, he’s done work with DJ Premier, Big Daddy Kane, Joell Ortiz, Nottz, and others, and his debut album, Eraser Shavings, has earned him plenty of accolades.

How Token Overcame A Language Disability To Become A Gifted Lyricist (Video)

Today (December 12), the Salem, Massachusetts, rapper has released a powerful video for “Exception,” a standout track from his recent LP. Lyrically, it’s a song about a high-school student (Andy) teased for having a stutter and talking to himself, obviously struggling with mental-health issues. Bullies call him “retard” and “faggot,” despite his never having “done something intentionally offensive.” As the song goes on, it becomes clear that Andy has a plan for retribution in mind, and the corresponding video is a piercing portrayal of a tragic event that is unfortunately far too common in the U.S. The video continues for another minute after the closing lyrics are delivered, during which Token’s character in the saga becomes weighed down with regret.

Currently, Token is gearing up to be on the road in Europe as a supporting act for Hopsin’s tour.
