A New Phife Dawg Album Is Coming & The 1st Song Shows Why He Is Forever (Video)

Next month will mark the first anniversary of the passing of Phife Dawg, whose presence continues to permeate Hip-Hop (and whose memory played a major role in A Tribe Called Quest’s recent performance at the Grammys). Beyond Tribe’s We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service, the late rapper’s voice hasn’t been heard on much new music, but in acknowledgment of today’s holiday (Valentine’s Day), indie imprint Soul Brokerz is giving Heads the greatest gift of love: a new Phife Dawg single and confirmation of last year’s  announcement that a new album is on the way.

Premiering at Okayplayer, “Wanna Dance” also features Detroit Neo-Soul artist Dwele and producer Mike City (known for such works as Carl Thomas’s “I Wish” and Brandy’s “Full Moon”) and is a feel-good romantic groove for all. “I just wanna dance with you, amongst other things,” Phife rhymes on the grown-folks record, which is accompanied by a lyric video. But beyond the brand-new Diggy rhymes, there’s more exciting news for Hip-Hop fans: the song will appear on Phife’s forthcoming posthumous album, Forever. More details on the album are pending, but for now, Heads can download the single for free by signing up with an e-mail address. According to the Soul Brokerz label, the album is “coming soon.”

The song will also appear on Dwele’s upcoming album (the first in five years) Same Book…New Chapter. Heads will likely recognize Dwele’s name from his decades worth of work, including collaborations with Elzhi, Slum Village, Jay Dee, Kanye West, and many more. In fact, Dwe’ worked alongside Phife in the past, too, on a remix for his 2012 song “What Profit,” from his 2012 Greater Than One album.
