Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller & Kevin Gates Re-Heat The Summer With A Cold Collabo (Audio)

In three different pockets of Rap music, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, and Kevin Gates are three stars of the 2010s. Critically and commercially, these three artists are leaders within their classes, not in the same ways, and certainly not with the same styles. Kendrick and Mac have decorated collaborative history, as recently as 2016’s “God Is Fair, Sexy Nasty.”

DJ Kay Slay assembles K-Dot, Mac, and Kevin for “Cold Summer.” The Big Brother (September 22) inclusion marks one of the grandest creations in the Drama King’s 35-plus-year Hip-Hop career. In the newly-available edited version, Kendrick speaks slowly and with conviction about the cold realities in his circle, where men die young, and loyalty is royalty. Mac follows. He rhymes about a day in the life, with temptation always lurking, while he tries to enjoy his success. Gates spits third, with so much pain to get off of his chest. The platinum Louisiana rapper shows the angst in his life, rapping about betrayal in the streets and in the sheets. This is more than stamping verses together, this song rings as a true collabo’.

Onetime Roc-A-Fella affiliate Rell, known for high profile appearances on Dr. Dre’s 2001, sings the hook on this perfect seasonal segway to September.
