Erick Sermon’s New Album Features Method Man, AZ, GFK & More. Here’s The 1st Song (Audio)

In 2017, EPMD announced that they were working on a concept album. Dynamic Duos: Big Business is slated to be the Long Island, New York duo’s eighth album in a series that dates back more than 30 years. The first LP in almost a decade comes after a reported Roc Nation contract, and years of touring.

Speaking with Drink Champs last September, E-Double confirmed that an album based on great Rap duos already includes some heavy hitters. “Right now, we have Capone-N-Noreaga, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Salt n’ Pepa, Black Star…Dynamic Duos is coming! It’s coming on Roc Nation,” said the Def Squad founder.

As Dynamic Duos prepares, Sermon has another project in the works and a new single. Sermon announced Go with Rolling Stone. The Green-Eyed Bandit’s eighth solo affair (and first since 2015’s E.S.P.) will be crowd-funded. Like fellow Strong Islanders De La Soul, Sermon is asking fans to raise $60,000 to record and release the LP. The album will serve as the first on the new Def Squad Records Sermon is launching. “I want to bring the balance back to Rap music and make songs that are not just about sex, drugs and money, and to give real music a chance,” said Sermon to Rolling Stone. “I want people to look at other creativity other then the same-old same-old and ask when are we gonna take the left turn and realize what J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar had done to make a balance in this rap game. The reason I’m starting this label is because I’m tired of hearing the depiction of what black people look like in the conversation. I want to make a balance in the culture, so it won’t be one-sided.”

In a video for the campaign, Erick details the purpose of the crowd-funding campaign, and outlines what those who donate will receive. On his Kickstarter page, he also says 8 songs are already complete and he plans to add another 3, for a total of 11.

While there is work to be done, Sermon has an attractive guest-list already in place. AZ, Redman, Too Short, Styles P, Ghostface Killah, Big K.R.I.T, Devin The Dude, and Kid Capri are some of the confirmed features for the Def Squad Records LP. The album also will feature Method Man, Craig Mack and Mr. Cheeks, both of whom join E. Double on lead single “Come Thru.”
