Chris Rivers Snatches Royce & Eminem’s Beat And Rips It Just As Hard (Audio)

Chris Rivers may be the son of one of Hip-Hop’s all-time great lyricists, but with a string of solid releases over the last five years he has stepped out of Pops’ shadow to have his work judged on its own merits. At the same time, the younger Rios does not shy away from continuing his father’s legacy of demonstrating flows that are hard to match. Last year’s Delorean is his strongest effort yet, and the album made it apparent this young MC prides himself on versatility. He straddles the line between the kind of Hip-Hop he heard in the house growing up and the tastes of a new generation.

For the last three months, Rivers has been dropping a weekly freestyle under the banner #BarzdayWednesday. This series has included the BX lyricist kicking a multitude of flows over Kanye West’s “Everything I Am,” Cardi B’s “I Like It,” Nicki Minaj’s “Chun-Li,” J Cole’s “ATM,” Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” and many more. This week he chose to attack the instrumental of the track that has recently been the talk of the Internet, “Caterpillar” by Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem (in addition to a separate remix with Nickel Nine and Logic). The single is produced by S1 (formerly of Strange Fruit Project) and Epikh Pro, and although the Bad Meets Evil duo did their thing on the original, the rapper also known as “The Dragon” blacks out over the beat. He basically rhymes for two minutes straight while changing up his cadence at least four times.

He has plenty of quotable lines. But towards the beginning of the onslaught he spits, “Kill half you n*ggas when I snap, uh, Thanos / Spoiler alert / Rivers spits fire, boiler alert / See my hearts in it, never miss beats, boy you’re alert / Stroke of genius, get spicy with words, boy you’re a jerk.” By the time pick up all the wordplay nuances of the “pizza / Leaning Tower of Pisa” rhyme scheme at the halfway mark, you will have a whole new level of respect for Rivers.
