Today (May 4), Royce 5’9 releases his seventh solo album, Book Of Ryan. The Detroit veteran’s latest LP includes “Summer On Lock.” For an album that already features J. Cole and Eminem on two of its video singles, this track involves more stars: Pusha T, Jadakiss, Fabolous, and Dancehall artist Agent Sasco. As the seasons are changing and temperatures this Spring are on the rise in many regions, this track clears the way for Nickel Nine to dominate Hip-Hop Heads’ earphones and speakers for weeks and months ahead.

Royce kicks things off with an elaborate rhyme scheme and an all-you-can-eat buffet of pop culture punchlines. He references Home Improvement and rappers spending their days trying to party with Puff Daddy. The same MC who flirted with Rihanna during the 2011 BET Cypher makes a move to let Cardi B that he finds her attractive too. ‘Kiss drops the next verse, with nimble bars that declare it is his season. The LOX MC raps about survival in his New York Streets, from tips on how to improve a bid to avoiding speed-traps. Closing out the cut, Fabolous throws brag raps about his plush living spaces and witty one-liners about his nonchalance and spending sprees. Pusha T, who is a Def Jam label-mate of ‘Kiss and Fab’, takes the chorus, reminding listeners that his dominance is not exclusive to warm weather months.
