The Native Tongues Had Mad Flavor. This 6-Hour Mix Celebrates All The Ingredients (Audio)

Hi. We recently created AFH TV, Ambrosia For Heads’ streaming video service, because we believe real Hip-Hop deserves its own dedicated TV home. But, there are doubters, so, we need your help. If you have enjoyed anything on AFH over the last 7 years, we are asking you to subscribe to AFH TV. It is only $1.99/month or $12/year, and already features some amazing content, but the best is yet to come. Thank you for all of your support.

There are not many collectives that have had as much impact on Hip-Hop, and on music in general, as Native Tongues. Although they never released an album as a unit, this extended family started in the late 1980s with seminal groups Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and De La Soul coming together under the banner. Within no time they had added Queen Latifah and Monie Love, and soon after Black Sheep, Chi Ali, Leaders Of The New School, and The Beatnuts. The Native Tongues brand came to signify left-field thinking and conscious Hip-Hop. They helped launch the careers of several other important artists like J. Dilla, Busta Rhymes, and Mos Def (nka Yasiin Bey), to name a few.

The Take It Personal Podcast crew, which consists of DJ 360, Jason Gloss, Kevlar, A-Aron, and Roger The Announcer, have set their sites on the Native Tongues posse for their 29th Episode. This team has an iron-clad reputation for exhaustive mixes that tribute regions, producers, and MCs.

A New Documentary Promises To Tell The Whole Truth About Native Tongues (Video)

In just under six hours DJ 360 skillfully mixes together a multitude of classics, rarities, and remixes interspersed with commentary by the crew and tidbits and samples that compliment the stories and anecdotes they reveal about this colorful squad. Some highlights include an alternate version of the ultimate N.T. posse cut, “Buddy,” De La’s b-side gem with A.T.C.Q., “Sh.fe.Mc’s,” and even a demo of Tribe’s “Scenario,” that features Mista Lawnge of Black Sheep, which is not included in the tracklist. Even those well versed in this area of Hip-Hop are likely to learn something from the Take It Personal crew’s notes and analysis. And make sure you listen to the whole mix as there is even an art print giveaway a couple of hours in.
