Over this past weekend, thanks to the help of T.I., an Atlanta church, and VH1’s Love and Hip Hop personality Scrapp Deleon, 23 non-violent offenders were able to spend the Easter holiday with their respective families. Thanks to contributions raised by Tip and others, bail was made for these offenders, as well as a chance to be welcomed back into their community, and a new opportunity to move forward.

At the start of Lent, T.I., Scrapp Deleon, and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church set out to raise $40,000 to begin a “Bail Out” program to bail non-violent offenders out of jail before Easter Sunday. In just 40 days, that goal was met threefold. Contributions reached $120,000, which allowed seven women and 16 men to be released from jail and spend time with their families on Easter.

Those released came from Georgia’s DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, and Rockdale counties. Stipulations for the “Bail Out” program include weekly check-ins with a mentor, and a portion of donation jump-starting college saving funds for returning citizens.

“It’s like a whole new clean slate,” program recipient Tyron Pollard told Fox 5 of his bail. “I was doing drugs before I got locked up … but I don’t want to do nothing but do right and strive to be a model citizen for my kids.”

“It’s almost like finally meeting the good Samaritan —somebody who you don’t know that you didn’t see coming,” senior pastor at New Birth Dr. Jamal Bryant says, describing program recipients’ reactions. “They’re appreciative to be able to press the refresh button.”

Earlier this year, T.I. was honored for his philanthropy by way of his nonprofit organizations Harris Community Works and For The Love of Our Fathers, an organization aiding people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. His latest record, DIME TRAP, released in September of last year.
