David Banner Bodies Diamond D Production With Some Food For Thought (Video)

It has been five years since Diamond D dropped The Diam Piece. Following some independent projects, that Dymond Mine/EMPIRE release garnered the D.I.T.C. triple-threat his greatest acclaim since 1997’s Hatred, Passion and Infidelity sophomore drop. In 2019, the Bronx, New Yorker assembled The Diam Piece 2, a sequel with an equally impressive lineup of guests and beats galore. The 16-track offering features a literal who’s who of classic Hip-Hop including Pharoahe Monch, Snoop Dogg, Erick Sermon, Fat Joe, Raekwon, Styles P, Elzhi, and many more. However, one MC that Heads might not have expected is Mississippi vet David Banner, who opens the latest single from the album, “Bodied.” This laid-back track also features Diamond’s longtime protege Big Rec, and Brooklyn multi-hyphenate, Edson Sean. A video for the song filmed and directed by Tommy Nova has arrived on the scene.

The visuals start with a quote from James Baldwin that sets the tone: “It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.” While “body” is exactly what both lyricists do to the beat, Banner and Rec also both drop knowledge.

The thumping snare and dramatic piano bring the Hulk out of Banner. “I ain’t battle rappin’, trappin’ mayne, or pimpin’ h*es / I’m spittin’ flows / That rip ya f*ckin’ skin from your clothes / I make the opposite / God Box, f*ck when I’m dropping it / The better question is, if I do, are you coppin’ / Or are you stealing / F*ck, I’m feeling like god in the flesh / You could get blessed / Get your heart ripped from your chest / I leave you Lost like an 8Ball with an SS.” The last bar references the Memphis, Tennessee MC/producer’s acclaimed double-disc artwork. Banner released his God Box back in 2017, featuring Black Thought, Big K.R.I.T., and Tito Lopez (nka Tito Lo)

Then not to be outdone, Rec rips an outstanding verse that includes these standout lines: “They mimicked our minds and muscled our memory / Embezzled our essence, so suffer repercussions…let it be / Reparations ain’t money and land only / Shenanigans just begun, big guns in the hand, homie / Trump got me between a rock and a hard place / A raw space between aligned  chakras and Scarface.” It is worth pointing out that Edson’s pays respect to an Earth, Wind & Fire hit, adding further groove to the food for thought.
