Gang Starr’s New Video With J. Cole Keeps Guru’s Legacy Alive (Video)
More than 15 years since the last Gang Starr video, DJ Premier releases “Family and Loyalty.” It’s a Fab 5 Freddy-directed visual featuring DJ Premier, J. Cole, Big Shug, and plenty of memories surrounding the impact Guru’s life made on others.
The video begins with Guru’s family (including his son, K.C.), DJ Premier, and Gang Starr Foundation O.G. Big Shug meeting with an estate attorney. Meanwhile, J. Cole listens in via video conference. Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal left his loved ones a bag of diamonds, given to him by an African chief. The amazing lyricist wants his family to disperse the jewels to those who knew him. The gesture mimics the single’s artwork and the MC’s verse. Guru also left behind a cassette tape, which begins the song when the lawyer plays it from a boombox.

With the song playing, those in attendance express their joy. A vignette shows rare family footage of Guru as well as Gang Starr. In Brooklyn, New York, the place where Gang Starr dwelled for many years, Preemo shows K.C. significant landmarks from his father’s life and legacy. Later, they hit Harlem, another locale where Guru spent time.
Premier disperses diamonds to meaningful people. Stops include community centers, restaurants, and the Allah School In Mecca. Then, J. Cole delivers his verse on video conference and from a basketball gym. Later, he appears in a brief sequence with Premier and Guru’s son. The love carries on.
