With Help From Eminem & Royce, Big Sean’s New Album Is Still Detroit Vs. Everybody

Last Friday (September 4), Big Sean released his fifth album, Detroit 2. One day before the eighth birthday of his 2012 mixtape that launched the series, the G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Records LP is another ensemble affair. Like the freebie, Royce 5’9″ offers some big-brother-support from Detroit. Meanwhile, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Nipsey Hussle, Anderson .Paak, Travis Scott, Wale, Ty Dolla $ign, Post Malone, and girlfriend Jhene Aiko are among the guests.

One song, “Friday Night Cypher,” aligns Sean with a whos-who of Detroit, including the Bad Meets Evil duo, Griselda addition Boldy James, Tee Grizzley, Kash Doll, Cash Kidd, 42 Dugg, Doughboyz Cashout member Payroll Giovanni, Sada Baby, and Drego. Like Royce, Sean has been working to bridge together different generations and styles from the Motor City.. This posse cut, produced by Key Wane, Hit-Boy, Helluva, and John Jay Henry (with multiple beats), does just that, including a prominent Clipse sample.
