Griselda Have Made A Sequel To A Mobb Deep Classic

Life is too short to listen to bad music. So…let Ambrosia For Heads sift through it for you and only supply you with that great stuff. Despite the reports, Hip-Hop is alive and well and, in many ways, is better than it’s ever been. Not only can we go back and listen to all of our favorites, at the click of a button, but there is also a ton of great music still being made by artists, young and veteran alike…if you know where to look. To help with that task, we’ve created a playlist with recently released music. We update it regularly, so, if you like what you hear, subscribe to follow us on Spotify.

This weekend, Westside Gunn released his second full-length album in less than a month. Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B follows the initial August album. The latest 20 songs feature production from Madlib, Alchemist, Daringer, Nicholas Craven, and others. Rap guests include Jay Electronica, AZ, Tyler, The Creator, 2 Chainz, and Griselda Records’ newest signings: Rome Streetz and Stove God Cook$.

As do many Griselda projects, this one features a posse cut by WSG, Conway The Machine, and Benny The Machine. All three Buffalo, New York natives have released albums in 2021. Conway’s La Maquina and Benny & Harry Fraud’s The Plugs I Met 2 were included on AFH‘s midyear best-of list back in late June. HWH8: Side B has an impressive showing from the trio on “Hell On Earth Pt. 2.” The song is an homage to Mobb Deep’s title track from their third album.

On the 2021 sequel, the three MCs packs substance, and swagger. WSG begins with a verse about his maneuvers from the Bay Area to Mexico, complete with score-settling revenge and dripped-out jewelry. Benny raps next, acknowledging a Grammy snub—when the independently-released Burden Of Proof (a collaboration with producer Hit-Boy) was not nominated: “A felon, I’ve been convicted, irrelevant what I’m spendin’ / But what matter is I’m doin’ better than what’s predicted, mmm / Should’ve got a Grammy nod, but f*ck it though ’cause Royce and Freddie family ties.” The verse bigs up Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist’s Alfredo as well as Royce 5’9’s The Allegory—two albums that feature Benny. Earlier this year the award went to Nas for King’s Disease, which Hit-Boy also produced.

Benny closes out with a proud proclamation: “I heard the albums ni**as just put out, yeah, those cute / But I’m the best, TT3, BOP, those proof.” As Griselda often records hours leading up to album release, the line may enter the ongoing discussions surrounding Drake’s Certified Lover Boy and Kanye West’s Donda. While Drake has praised Benny before, the Butcher was absent for WSG and Conway’s appearance on ‘Ye’s “Keep My Spirit Alive.” During a recent Twitch, Benny said Drake opted not to include a recent collaboration they made. As far as Kanye, the MC told his curious fans, “I don’t think ‘Ye wanted me on there. I don’t care about it, but it’s cool. I got all types of rapper homeboys that’s friends, that’s dope, that’s legends. Every time they’re dropping an album, I’m not asking why I’m not on that stuff.”

Conway closes things out with big opening bars: “Jordan pack 5s, gun metal somethin’ special / Used to serve yay, wordplay on Big Pun level.” Then, using some M-O-B-B lingo, he calls out the haters: “I bought some water, watch how salty ni**as look / Sneak dissin’, same ni**as used to call me for a hook, right? / I thought these ni**as crooks, why all these ni**as shook? / Griselda, we took sh*t over like how long it really took?” Notably, Havoc produced and rapped on The Machine’s 2020 LP, From A King To A GOD.

“Hell On Earth Pt. 2” is produced by St. Louis, Missouri’s Sovren. She has previously praised Mobb Deep and Havoc.

You can hear “Hell On Earth, Pt. 2” and other selections from Hitler Wears Hermes 8 (side A and side B), La Maquina, and The Plugs I Met 2 on the official AFH playlist, well as new music from AZ, Common, Nas, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, MF DOOM, CZARFACE, Lloyd Banks, Ransom, DMX, and Statik Selektah, among others.
