Joey Purp & Chance The Rapper Make A Def Jam Like Back In The Day (Video)

Chicago, Illinois artist Joey Purp is having a banner year in 2016. His iiiDrops project is the latest in a series of Windy City freebies that balances substance, swagger, and a lot of originality. He releases one of the effort’s standouts as a visual, the Chance The Rapper-assisted “Girls.” While Joey may be independent, he makes the most of his resources in this video. It’s two MCs, a lot of well—girls, some friends, and an old Cadillac just kicking it.

The simplicity also extends to the song’s beat and chorus. The MCs have their fun on a simple drum track that keeps the energy high, and the attention on the lyrics. As Joey hopes to follow Chance, Vic Mensa, Jamila Woods, Mick Jenkins, NoName Gypsy, and others as a far-reaching export, “Girls” may be that vehicle. While it’s modern, this is not the first of Purp’s art to call back to that Rick Rubin and Larry Smith-era of Hip-Hop.
