Q-Tip, Leonardo Dicaprio & Jonah Hill Are Creating a Native Tongues-Inspired TV Show

Q-Tip has many friends in high places. The longtime front-man MC/producer for A Tribe Called Quest has starred in films with Nicole Kidman, rolled with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, and kicks it with Leonardo Dicaprio. Leo and Tip have been friends for years, and even had a lively 2008 Interview magazine discussion about Hip-Hop and Disco taking on similar directions through mainstream exposure.

Now it seems, that according to Deadline, Dicaprio and his Wolf Of Wall Street co-star Jonah Hill are working with The Abstract on a TV series inspired by the Native Tongues’ formation. Q-Tip was the real-life founding member of a Rap collective, that in addition to Tribe, included De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah, Monie Love, Black Sheep, and Leaders Of The New School, among others.

What’s particularly interesting here, is Q has never been fond of re-visiting the days of the Natives. While he maintains close associations with Busta Rhymes, and did concerts with Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed in 2013, not all the Tongues are on the best of terms today. However, the collective—which never made an album—remains deeply influential 25+ years later.
