The Marvin Gaye & Mos Def Mash-Up Gets A Bonus Round In Yasiin Gaye: The Return Side Two (Mixtape)

Less than three months after musical-mixologist Amerigo Gazaway unleashed Yasiin Gaye: The Departure: Side 1, the mythical, digital tape gets turned over for the B-side. Yasiin Gaye: The Return: Side Two really captures Marvin Gaye’s studio and vocal innovations, while deeply considering the late ’90s Mos Def material often overlooked in the mainstream. A Mike Zoot appearance is added to show that Gazaway’s crates go deep, and his vision for this show-stealing 2014 series/mixtape is rich with value, context, and playability.

Says Amerigo: “I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before Hip-Hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artists [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context.”
