Is Kendrick Lamar’s “Butterfly” Artwork The Next Classic Hip-Hop Image?

After midnight EST this morning (March 11), Kendrick Lamar appears to have revealed the artwork to his sophomore major label album. While the March 23 LP title remains unconfirmed, the Compton, California MC took to Facebook to share a stickered image, suggesting that it’s the packaging associated with his good kid, m.A.A.d city follow-up.

It appears, based on the emphasis of the post, that To Pimp A Butterfly is the title. Did “T.P.A.B.” just become 2015’s buzz-acronym?

The artwork shows a group of African-American males, many of whom are shirtless, holding hundred dollar bills and bottles, posing in front of the White House. A court judge is shown keeled over, with x’s over his eyes.

How do you interpret this image? Does Kendrick Lamar have an iconic piece of artwork in lines with classic works by Ice-T, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, N.W.A., and Snoop Doggy Dogg?

Is To Pimp A Butterfly a playful reference to Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird novel?
