MC Ren Gets Ruthless About N.W.A. “Straight Outta Compton” Trailers

N.W.A. had four MCs: founder Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and MC Ren. In the marketing materials for August 14’s Straight Outta Compton biopic, Ren feels as though he is not getting proper billing. Specifically, Ren attacked some of the Universal Pictures trailers.

This morning (June 10), the Compton, California veteran MC took to Twitter to blast the film’s marketing:

Notably, MC Ren and N.W.A.’s mixmaster, DJ Yella, were the only N.W.A. members still working with Eazy-E at the time of his 1995 death. Ren was the only N.W.A. member to release solo albums on E’s Ruthless Records, including 1993’s gold-certified Shock Of The Hour.

Ren’s accomplishments may not be as palpable to mainstream audiences, compared to Eazy-E’s high-profile life and death, Dr. Dre’s billion dollar accomplishments, and Ice Cube’s transition from Gangsta Rap to film franchise superstar.

Ren’s tweets come the same week that he was announced to reunite on stage with Ice Cube and DJ Yella for the first time in 26 years. Eazy’s widow (Tomica Woods-Wright), Dr. Dre, and Cube are all films producers.

Here’s one official trailer:

Do you think MC Ren is getting a raw deal? Think N.W.A. is in store for more inner-group turmoil?
