Maxwell Is Releasing His First Album In 7 Years. Here’s The First Single (Lyric Video)
Like few other artists–D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Dr. Dre–Maxwell is one of the select ones who can go away for years and return, not only without losing a step, but sounding better than ever. The artist who helped to change the sonic landscape in 1996 with his debut album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, has been a beacon of consistency and quality over his 20-year career, but his output has been extremely selective, with only 4 studio albums in his catalog. He returned in 2009 with BLACKsummers’night, after an 8-year hiatus. Now, 7 years later he’s coming back in a big way with blackSUMMERS’night and a Summer concert tour.
While details about his new album are still emerging, it appears to be a companion piece to the 2009 album, with its flip on the emphasis of the title, and it has a release date of July 1, bolstering the Summer theme. The first single, “Lake By The Ocean,” opens with the trademark falsetto and classic Soul for which Maxwell is known. The song was released via a lyric video featuring scenic views of the mountains.
Maxwell premiered the song earlier today during a visit to The Breakfast Club, where he spoke at length about life, love, family and his two decade long career. You can view the entire interview below.
