This Saturday (June 25) marks the 20th anniversary of Jay Z’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt. The 1996 Roc-A-Fella/Priority Records LP would launch a career trajectory that has arguably been one of Hip-Hop’s biggest, transcending from the Marcy Houses to the top of Hip-Hop, as well as streaming platforms, fashion, liquor, and sports franchise ownership, sports agency, film, and many key partnerships. Before all of that was possible, it started with great music, that resonated in the streets and on the charts. For most, Reasonable Doubt signifies that genesis.

In celebrating R.D.‘s birthday, Wax Poetics magazine and WhoSampled orchestrated a DJ Matman mix that reconstructs the roaring Roc days with style. This 51-minute, 32-song mix delves into samples, audio interview footage, and live performance segments of songs that many Hip-Hop Heads know, love, and live by. Included in the stacks of wax is music by Nas, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Isaac Hayes, Ahmad Jamal, and The Stylistics. With Jay’s vocals still in tow, this a great, different way to “feel it.”

This particular mix and concept celebrates not only Shawn Carter’s brilliant songwriting and innovative delivery, but pays respects to the ingenuity of album producers including DJ Premier, Ski Beatz, DJ Clark Kent, Irv Gotti, Sean C., and Jay’s lyrical mentor-turned-beatmaker, Jaz-O.
