2 Chainz Shows He Has Freestyle Fire In His DNA As He Rips Kendrick’s Hit (Video)

Though an immensely successful rapper with six Grammy nominations (and one win), six Platinum (or better) selling singles, and even more juggernaut appearances as a featured guest on some of Rap’s hottest records, 2 Chainz isn’t a rapper whose name immediately comes up when discussing the best freestylers in the game. Longtime fans are well aware that his discography holds far more than radio-ready party records or trapping anthems, even when he rapped under his previous pseudonym, Tity Boi. Nevertheless, he retains his fair share of detractors, despite working alongside respected artists like Kanye West, Pusha T, Pharrell, Big K.R.I.T., and Kendrick Lamar.

2 Chainz’s performance in a recent freestyle will hopefully earn him the respect of more Hip-Hop fans, as he deftly delivers off-the-top work inspired by Lamar. Over “DNA,” Lamar’s recent single from his blockbuster LP DAMN., 2 Chainz rips some extemporaneous bars for the LA Leakers at POWER106 to promote his forthcoming album. “Man, I got so many demons, don’t make me demonstrate/I know trappers, rappers, actors got the Phantom for the mansion,” he spits, closely recreating Lamar’s own delivery on the original. Never losing his footing or skipping a beat, 2 Chainz infuses the freestyle with much of the streetwise humor that’s made him so famous: “First I met the plug, then I met his sister/Bought 20 packs, then I turned around and kissed her.”

2 Chainz’ new LP, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, drops Friday, June 16.
