From the first time I heard Raheem DeVaughn back in 2002 on DJ Jazzy Jeff’s The Magnificent album, I knew he was a special vocalist. Not only did he have a voice that simultaneously projected strength and vulnerability, he also sang songs of substance. Over the years, he has established a pattern of making albums that dealt partly with matters of the heart and partly with matters of the mind. Now, DeVaughn is readying a new album, A Place Called Loveland, that, as the title suggests, is all about the universal language. The album will be released on September 3rd. He’s assembled a 25-minute preview for A Place Called Loveland that consists of music from the album, some previously unreleased material and commentary from Raheem describing the concept behind the album and the respective tracks.
