If you’re a fan of the 70’s film Superfly or even Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle album, you know the impact that Curtis Mayfield had on soul music, Hip-Hop, film and pop culture, generally. I first saw D’Angelo channel the late, great Mayfield as he opened a soulful show on New Year’s Eve 1996 at the Apollo with the classic Gimme Your Love. It was mind-blowing and pre-YouTube so all that remained after that blissful 90 seconds was the memory. I recently stumbled on a clip of D’Angelo performing the song (on YouTube of course). Though it’s not the one from the Apollo, D attacks the song with the same soulfulness he did that night (as far as I can remember…). Check it out below.
