Mister Cee Opens Up To GQ, Says That Biggie Smalls Would Have Stood By Him

This is a week for the Heads that love to read. Following this week’s Kanye West and Steve McQueen conversation in Interview magazine, GQ pulls out the big guns with Mister Cee in a story that’s been in the works for almost four months. After the on-air discussion with HOT 97’s Program Director Ebro Darden, Cee has remained almost entirely quiet about his arrests in recent years, his sexual orientation, and all other personal matters.

However, the Cee conversation is leading to a much bigger conversation, about Hip-Hop, sexuality, and homophobia. After all, Mister Cee has been around since the early days of Big Daddy Kane’s solo career, and not only helped sign The Notorious B.I.G. to Bad Boy after producing a cult-championed demo tape, he co-executive produced Ready To Die. In the time since, “The Finisher” as lunchtime listeners know him by, has put a soundtrack to the afternoon commuters and radiogoers for years and years. Cee’s mixes and tributes are among the most talked-about and aggregated things on terrestrial radio, and still, the Brooklyn native is in the hot seat, literally.

While this is a piece that demands to be read in full, here are some powerful excerpts:

Mister Cee on his fears after the first, 2010 and 2011 arrests: “Once you walk in the station, all it takes is one black officer to recognize you…When I got arrested in 2011—this is just my theory—that came out from the D.A.’s office. That leaked from the D.A. That didn’t leak from a precinct. You know, after a while, I’m making deals with the D.A.: ‘I’m never going to do this again. I’m never going to do this again.’ And they’re like, ‘Okay, all right. All right.’ And they let me slide the first couple of times. That third time, they was just like, ‘Yo…’ ”

Cee points out that Jay Z, 50 Cent, Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes all sent their support. Cee also describes the distinctly-Big Daddy Kane reaction to his ordeal.

On what Biggie would think: “I know Big stands next to me. I have no question in my mind.”

What do you think, especially given some of Biggie’s verses?
