Yasiin Bey To Honor Muhammad Ali’s Birthday With 3 Exclusives From Africa & New Series (Video)

Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) is a man of surprises. The Brooklyn, New York MC is reclusive at times, and extremely artistically active at others. With less than 24 hours notice, Yasiin has announced on January 17th (5:30 PM EST), he will celebrate champion boxer/social activist Muhammad Ali’s (one of Yasiin’s heroes) birthday by unleashing some gems.

Via a special beachside video on his Facebook page, Yasiin announced plans to drop three exclusive songs on 1/17.

Called “The Time Is Always Now,” Bey reveals that he’s transmitting live, from an undisclosed place on the continent of Africa. The series will continue to hit all other continents. “Part of the reason we were keen to not reveal the location was to highlight the continent, and the diversity throughout the continent,” said Yasiin, about not excluding aspects of society or geography. Releasing the details as they go, Bey also stressed his need for urgency.

Yasiin chose Africa based on his birth, and happiness there. In the interview, the MC/actor also talks “Good Friday,” which could be his rendition of “G.O.O.D. Friday,” the 2010 marketing/promotion plug used by Kanye West, who has since inked a deal with Bey.
