You may see a bunch of catchy headlines about Kendrick Lamar’s extended interview today with Hot 97. There will be talk about Lady Gaga, Macklemore, his upcoming appearance on SNL, how many kids he wants to have…All of that is accurate, but it’s fluff compared to the jewels he drops about the current direction of his music. Quite simply, Kendrick Lamar is on a mission to change lives. Taking notes from the likes of Marvin Gaye, the Isley Brothers and Andre 3000, at the end of the day, he wants his music to mean something and is unwilling to compromise by catering to trends, peer pressure or record company expectations. This entire interview is worthwhile, but, if you only have a few minutes, hone in on what Kendrick has to say from 8:00 to 13:00 and 25:50 until the end. You will be engaged and refreshed by what you hear. Check out the video.
