Though she is the first lady of TDE, both literally and figuratively, SZA has blazed her own path. Far from a rapper, like her label mates, the talented young songstress’ music defies convention. A true musical chameleon, she can effortlessly flip from channeling Bjork to Erykah Badu and everything in between. On her latest, “Sobriety,” she puts a bluesy spin on a rolling and moody track with lyrics that depict a dark, dream-like reflection on a relationship gone wrong, and its after-effects. With all of the cookie cutter, paint-by-numbers music flooding the airwaves, her eclectic approach is a breath of fresh air. Check it out.
