Itzsoweezee! De La Soul Hits Their $110,000 Kickstarter Goal & Then Some…

Less than 48 hours after De La Soul launched a Kickstarter campaign to record, manufacture, and release their yet-to-be-titled eighth studio album, they have seemingly hit their goal. Asking for $110,000, Posdnous, Dave (f/k/a Trugoy), and Maseo have reached more than $188,000 at time of publication.

This ensures that the Long Island, New York Hip-Hop veterans can proceed with the Vox Recording Studio sessions (reportedly on analog tape and equipment) of their first studio LP since 2004’s The Grind Date. Already, the former Tommy Boy Records stars confirmed that 2 Chainz is on the LP, along with Gorillaz’ Damon Albarn, Talking Heads front-man David Byrne, and Big Boi’s Swedish homies, Little Dragon. Thirty one days remain of fundraising.

“Itzsoweezee” may take on new meaning:

Speaking during the fundraising process in the form of a Kickstarter statement, De La said that they would be sampling their own catalog for this body of work. With previous ties to Tommy Boy, Sanctuary, and other labels, that likely comes at a licensing cost.

With estimated delivery dates on their fundraising packages in September, will this bump up the LP?

What does the funding surge say about crowd-sourcing, creative support rewards, and D.L.S. in general?
