The legendary DJ Premier has announced the next move in his already diverse and groundbreaking music career. VH1 has chosen the Gang Starr producer to compose, score and take on the role of executive music producer for their upcoming original movie The Breaks. The film will be written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann, one of the talents behind great TV successes like “The Walking Dead,” “The Wire,” and “Homeland.”

DJ Premier at D & D Recording Studios. D & D Studios will be relocating from Manhattan to Queens in 2015.

The Breaks is based upon the critically acclaimed 2011 non-fiction book by Dan Charnas, The Big Payback: The History of the Business of Hip-Hop, which has been noted as one of the most comprehensive accounts of Hip-Hop history ever. Charnas, an editor, screenwriter, and producer, is among Hip-Hop Journalism’s elite. Now deeply involved with Medium’s Cuepoint, he co-wrote the story for the script in The Breaks and will also be serving as executive director. The film is set to release Fall 2015.

Preemo has been busy creating a new chapter with his music ever since the January 7 closing of the monumental D&D Studios and his relocation to the new “HeadQcourterz” in Astoria, Queens. Previously, Premier’s music has appeared in films such as 8 Mile, Belly, and more recently, in Freedom Writers.
