From The D.O.C. to Scarface, Spice 1 to Yasiin Bey, Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues” has been the source of some of Hip-Hop’s most meditative songs. The dark chords from the original pulled one of Gaye’s deepest performances from him, as he pondered the ills of ghettos across America.

Styles P is the latest to tap the instrumental, and it has yielded some of Ghost’s most conscious lyrics to date. He tackles self-exploitation on Instagram, loss of all sense of community in the hood and the systematic destruction wreaked by crack and HIV.
