The “Rap God” Eminem is Now On Rap Genius

Eminem is the latest famous MC to create a verified account on Rap Genius and give some annotations to his songs and lyrics. The website is used to provide explanations to song lyrics, which Eminem does for several of his songs. He also gives insight into the creative process behind some of his work.

Eminem writes about how “My Name Is” was the first song he ever did with Dr. Dre, and how he didn’t like doing punch-ins before recording with Dre. “I didn’t like that concept because I wasn’t used to it. When we were recording here in Detroit, in the beginning, I was saving up my money to go in [the studio]. We only had an hour, you know? I’m like “One take down, alright, let’s go to the next song.” He also explains the creation of his Slim Shady persona on “Just Don’t Give A Fuck“, how Dido’s “Thank You” gave him the idea to write “Stan“, the way he loves connecting syllables on “Renegade“, and his motivations for songs like “Sing For The Moment” and “Rap God“.

Eminem gives his thoughts on other artists’ songs, too, writing about how selecting 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” as the first single off of Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ came down to flipping a coin (the other option was “If I Can’t“). He also weighs in on a vintage Biggie/2Pac Freestyle , celebrating healthy competition in Hip-Hop, while cautioning against taking it off wax, “no one wants to see something real happen [outside of Rap]”.
