J. Cole and Trae tha Truth Lament Over Children Left Behind (Audio)

A  veteran of Houston’s rap scene (he’s even got his very own Trae Day in his hometown), Trae tha Truth has been releasing solo music since 2003, when he dropped Losing Composure, an all H-Town affair featuring Paul Wall, Bun B, Chamillionaire, and his fellow Guerrilla Maab cohorts Z-Ro and Dougie D. Six mixtapes later, he has arrived at Tha Truth, which dropped earlier today. Enlisting the assistance of Boosie, Dej Loaf, Future, Nipsey Hussle, Rick Ross, and more, Trae’s debut album was partly inspired by a pep talk from J. Cole, who is featured on “Children of Men,” the latest single from Tha Truth (which also features Ink).

In it, the two MCs wax sorrowful about the obstacles presented by the system, particularly when it comes to children. First up is Cole, who rips the track open with “Wonder what it’s like. How a nigga kill a nigga on site? Did he hesitate? Think about his life?” The judgment, however, is not placed squarely on the shoulders of the shooter. “Group home, nigga never had no fosters, ’cause who takin’ home the little black kid? Poor thing, his mama is a crackhead.” Trae continues with two mournful verses, reflecting on the lack of options for many disenfranchised kids. “Black cloud, black rain, to his head where he aim, full of shame, now the bullet in his brain.”
