Regardless Of When It’s From, Unreleased Jay Electronica Songs Stay Fresh (Audio)

Since Dr. Dre released an album in 2015, what is taking the place of Detox? Compton can still be referred to by that, as many Heads debated (heatedly) whether the Aftermath Entertainment founder would release an LP by any title. With that out of the way (and on the charts), perhaps Jay Electronica enters the spotlight?

For more than seven years, the New Orleans, Louisiana native MC/producer has dazzled through a la carte singles, feature looks, and straight-to-Soundcloud releases that stirred major waves in the digital ocean. Co-signed by Puff Daddy, signed to Roc Nation, and still with Just Blaze in his corner, Jay Elect finished his LP, and it sits on select hard drives and phones, perhaps never to be released.

On occasion, archival music from Jay’s sessions hits the web. Today (September 16) is one such day. Like an artifact, “Holladay” was discovered by 2DopeBoyz. The Bob James-based is the perfect dramatic canvas for Jay E. to spout off stream of consciousness raps that are as sharp as anything heard from him in several calendars. With a clear cut influence by The Roots’ Black Thought, this moment will draw comparisons to some of Electronica’s most pointed solo work. That wordplay, pulpit-style delivery, and perfectly symmetric rhymes is there. In just two minutes, this clue as to Act II: Patents Of Nobility may excite everybody’s hopes. If Kendrick Lamar and Drake can drop albums at whim, certainly Jay Electronica can…

The mix is rough, but it almost adds to the mystique. And if it appears on an album (it was not on the rumored tracklist), CDQ will be all the welcome.
