Anthony Hamilton Puts The Gospel In Hotline Bling And Gives It New Meaning (Video)

Hi. We recently created AFH TV, Ambrosia For Heads’ streaming video service, because we believe real Hip-Hop deserves its own dedicated TV home. But, there are doubters, so, we need your help. If you have enjoyed anything on AFH over the last 7 years, we are asking you to subscribe to AFH TV. It is only $1.99/month or $12/year, and already features some amazing content, but the best is yet to come. Thank you for all of your support.

With all the covers, remixes and non-stop plays of the original, Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” which was already derivative, will not die. And, just when it seemed there could not be another original re-invention of the song, enter Anthony Hamilton and his group, The Hamiltones.

Hamilton has always been a singer with an old soul, and he and his group completely re-imagine the song in the vein of a good, old-fashioned spiritual. The gospel re-arrangement not only sounds different, it gives the song a completely different import. In fact, the overall tone is more of a humble plea similar to that conveyed in Gospel classics like “Pass Me Not,” than the self-pity party of the original. Take a look.
