At 50, Janet Jackson Still Has The Goods To Make You Say “Dammn Baby” (Video)

Today (May 5), the world has been gifted with two huge pieces of Janet Jackson-related news. First, reports have shared that the 49-year-old superstar and her husband Wissam Al Mana are expecting, which of true would mean Ms. Jackson would become a first-time mother at the age of 50. While an official statement from the couple seems to still be pending, a representative has yet to refute the news, and fans are unsurprisingly delighted.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Janet is also behind “Dammn Baby,” her latest single and video which may or may not carry a tongue-in-cheek title. In any event, the video is very much a nod to ’90s R&B videos, shot entirely in black and white with some fantastic choreography running through its entirety. Particularly notable about the video are Ms. Jackson’s choices in back-up dancers: all women, they are also representative of different age groups and shapes. Tweens dance alongside the middle-aged, and the curvy alongside the lean. The song itself is signature Janet – resilient, triumphant, airy, and infectious. It’s an anthem for the underdog, the woman who’s sidelined because she’s too old, too smart, too successful, or too rebellious to be desirable by society’s standards. But as Janet proves over and over again, women have the power to be Unbreakable.
