Chuuwee Returns to Remind Us It Isn’t All About the Benjamins (Video)

Sacramento, California’s Chuuwee is an MC whose stylistic flavor belies the places he’s been. His sound is deftly delivered in the lane of his now-native NorCal, but the 25-year-old spent considerable time in Texas, where he was born and lived the first third of his life. Having also lived in Oakland, he has been making serious noise on the underground circuit since his 2009 debut mixtape Mauve Monster and in the years since, he’s added Consequence, Killer Mike, Large Professor, and others to his list of collaborators. These days, he and Los Angeles rapper Trizz are making noise as a unit, having released a follow-up to 2014’s collaborative project AmeriKKa’s Most Blunted in March. AmeriKKa’s Most Blunted 2 has been widely acclaimed, but those waiting for new solo material from Chuuwee have been eagerly awaiting something else entirely – Economics, which arrives in August.

Rome Clientel & DJ Concept Bask In Life’s Pleasures With Chuuwee & Rick Gonzalez (Audio Premiere)

Fittingly, the forthcoming 2016 LP features a lead single titled “Mxney,” a track (released on its own a year ago) that has something really important to say despite its hypnosis-inducing production. Lyrically presented as a plea for the fame and money-obsessed to rid themselves of the shackling confines promoted therein, the music video premiering today on Ambrosia for Heads is a clever quilting together of animation and reality. “Isn’t if funny how people will lay down for money and stand up for nothin’?,” he asks while vintage [i think] black-and-white cartoons of bank robbers flash behind him on screen. The song’s message goes deeper than derision of those chasing the paper, however. “The people we worship don’t come from our struggle, they ain’t about nothin’ but money,” he repeats throughout. Perhaps a criticism of the music industry or society at large, the song’s content is clear evidence that Chuuwee’s rise to acclaim in the indie Rap world has earned him the experience he’ll need to navigate his personal success – whether that means a future with a major label or otherwise.

”This video means a lot to me because it’s my first music video ever shot overseas,” Chuuwee told Ambrosia For Heads. The visual was shot in the Netherlands.
