TDE’s Isaiah Rashad Serves Up Some “Free Lunch” And It Tastes Great (Audio)

After a breakout year in 2014, Isaiah Rashad has been relatively quiet since. The Chattanooga MC joined Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock in the 2013 Hip Hop Awards Cypher, as part of Top Dog Entertainment, and released his TDE debut, Cilvia Demo, just a few months after. In January, he seemed poised to return to the scene, with a new song and video for “Smile.” However, the release proved to be an isolated event. Now, it appears things might be changing, after a pair of cryptic posts from his label brass and a new song drop from Isaiah, himself.

Yesterday, both Top Dawg, the owner of TDE, and Dave Free, the label’s President, tweeted the same tantalizing message “9.02.16 #TDE.” Given that earlier in the year, Top posted an image suggesting there would be 6 releases from the label this year, speculation ran rampant that the tweets suggested the release of a new project since, to date, only Kendrick Lamar and ScHoolboy Q have 2016 product in stores. However, given that the label has also announced a TDE-roster tour this year, the tweet could mean anything.

What’s certain is that today (8/7), Isaiah Rashad has released a new song, and it is soul food for the ears. “Free Lunch” is a mid-tempo song designed for listening and head nodding. Rashad’s melodic baritone drives the song, but the loping, soulful track guarantees the ride is smooth. Given the proximity of the tweets and the release, it’s possible Isaiah is next up. Whether that proves to be the case of not, 2 things are certain: 1. TDE has something big coming in September, and 2. Isaiah Rashad has not lost the magic that charmed fans two years ago.
