Redman, Lloyd Banks, Jadakiss & Obie Trice Set Up A New Standard For Collabos (Audio)

After signing to Eminem’s Shady Records in 2000, fellow Detroit native Obie Trice (real name, no gimmicks) dropped his debut album Cheers, three years later. Production from Eminem, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Mr. Porter and others made it a heavy hitter, as did guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, D12, 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, and more. “Got Some Teeth,” the album’s lead single, performed moderately well and was followed up with “When Shit Hits the Fan” and the Dr. Dre-produced “The Set Up,” the latter featuring vocals from Nate Dogg (and a video cameo from Warren G). The two would team up once again for the song’s remix, which starred a cast of MCs who together created a PSA raising awareness about fast women with ulterior motives.

Though not included in the official track list for Cheers, “The Setup (Remix)” has become a fan favorite, thanks to the addition of Redman, Lloyd Banks, and Jadakiss. The three contributed some East Coast grit to the Midwest rapper’s original version, and all would deliver some memorable quotes along the way. Reggie Noble is up first, who recounts a tale of a dangerous woman who uses her sexuality to get what she wants from unsuspecting men and women. “She got a G.E.D. from night school, that stand for Gettin’ Everybody’s Dolla greedy,” he raps, brilliantly flipping the word “degree.” But it isn’t just men who should be on the look out, he warns. “When the stripper ain’t lookin’, she grabbed a $50 right out the bitch thong when her song was on.”

At the time of the song’s release, Lloyd Banks was still a relative newcomer, as G-Unit’s Beg for Mercy dropped two months after Cheers. Nevertheless, he certainly held his own alongside the Brick City and D-Block veterans. Banks is equally distrustful of the scammers with an eye on his cash. “They’re hungry and they’re plannin’ to profit, so I get all my hoodrat head with my hand in my pocket,” he says. ‘Kiss dispenses the kind of advice that only comes with years of experience, rapping “it’s a dirty game, and rule number one, you never spend clean money on a dirty dame.”

Cracking Billboard‘s top five, the LP has since been joined by three other studio albums, most recently 2015’s The Hangover. Just this week, Obie took to Instagram to acknowledge the 13th anniversary of his debut project, saying “this record changed my life good and bad.”
