Bruno Mars Meets Grandmaster Flash & The Message Is Golden (Video)

Earlier this month, Bruno Mars simultaneously announced he was releasing his first album in 4 years and dropped the video single for “24K Magic,” the title track. Like previous Mars’ releases, the song channeled the best of yesteryear in a way that was both authentic and iterative. In the case of “24K Magic,” Mars drew on the sounds of 80s Funk, pulling the vocoder from Roger Troutman & Zapp, and tapping a bass line reminiscent of the tightest grooves from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and others who led the wave of music in that era.

As retro cool as Mars’ song and video are, leave it to the internet to raise the ante. DJ Shahar Varshal, who has made a host of clips mashing up current hits with past classics, took it upon himself to combine “24K Magic” with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message.” Widely considered one of the greatest Hip-Hop songs of all-time, if not THE greatest, it seems like sacrilege to touch the song at all, but others like Ice Cube and Puff Daddy have done so, successfully, so there is precedent.

For his take, Varshal mixes not only the songs, but the videos, absolutely seamlessly. The mashup primarily relies on Mars’ instrumental and the vocals of Grandmaster Melle Mel, but there are several times where the levels are up on both, or the raps are lowered and filled in with Mars’ ad libs. It is expertly crafted and an incredible listen, once past the initial shock.
