Kevin Durant Has Inspired His Roc Nation Brother Jay Electronica To Release Music (Audio)

Jay Electronica certainly picks his spots. The MC/producer without an album to his name has used the last decade-plus to release verses that are forced to hold over fans. In that period, the affiliate of Just Blaze, Talib Kweli, and Nas has signed with Roc Nation, thrown high profile jabs at peers, and toyed with an album that has yet to show signs of surfacing.

The New Orleans, Louisiana representative dropped “Letter To Falon” at will. Although the song dates back to 2012 tracklist postings of the then-called Act 2: Patents Of Nobility (The Turn) album, Jay connected the song’s release to Kevin Durant’s recent play for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. However, upon listening to the Tidal exclusive (available for free, full stream to the public) it’s far deeper than sports highlights. Instead, the artist uses the Bullitts and Paul Epworth-produced (along with Jay himself) track to discuss pushing on, through hurdles, hardships, and difficult circumstances. As Durant has waited a decade to earn his championship (something he hopes to do this month), so is the artist who quietly emerged on Nas’ Untitled album around the same time.

The verses deal with the forces that help us push ahead. Within, Jay even recalls his days in Philadelphia (something heard on his “Exhibit” series) handing out spiritual literature in the hood. Meanwhile, he talks about the fight to keep going the distance, shining, creating, and learning.

Early Tuesday morning, Just Blaze specified that this version differs from the 2012 rendition:

Perhaps more music is coming, or the Jay Electronica mythology continues to grow.
