Remy Ma Sends Shots From The Podium Like It’s The Source Awards (Video)

Twelve years since her last BET Awards win, Remy Ma took home “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” honors in 2017. The complement to Kendrick Lamar’s male win, Remy celebrated the accolade with some controversy. For starters, upon winning she broke a seven-year streak held by foe/rival Nicki Minaj. And Remy knew it. After thanking her husband Papoose, her Plata O Plomo partner Fat Joe, and her former Bedford Hills Correctional Facility fellow inmates, Remy sent shots.

Upon her win, the first words from the RNG/Empire artist were “Are you dumb?” She repeated herself. This picked up from words used in an Instagram Live diss to Rap enemy Nicki Minaj earlier this month. However, it’s where the comeback queen closed her speech that will get many talking. She quoted some hand-picked bars from her song “Spaghetti”:

Y’all b*tches got fat while we starved / Shots in your ass, pads in your bras / Y’all some liars it ain’t no facts in your songs / And yeah that crown is coming back to the Bronx,” touted Remy in a tradition that might make Suge Knight (whose 1995 Source Awards speech lives in infamy) proud.

Notably, Remy shouted out Lil’ Kim in her thank you’s while exiting the stage. Kim is another veteran New York MC who has hand publicized problems (and diss records) with Nicki Minaj. Nicki has won every year from 2010 to 2016, virtually following her career in the mainstream. Last year, Remy lost to her in the same category in the only other time the two competed for this award.

The awards night was otherwise free of any controversy of this level. However, the drama between the First Lady of Terror Squad and the YMCMB Queen shows no signs of slowing soon.

Nicki Minaj Re-Asserts Her Claim As The Queen Of Rap In Her New Video

In late 2016, Rem’ and Joe won a BET Hip Hop Award for the platinum single “All The Way Up.” That song also garnered a Grammy nomination. The question now becomes whether Nicki (who does not hold a Grammy either) cares enough to fire back. If present, her reaction was not captured on screen. She has yet to respond on social media.

Remy now joins Nicki (7) and Missy Elliott (5) as the only multi-award winners in the category.
