The past week has been a controversial one for Joey Bada$$. Prior to the total eclipse, the Brooklyn MC was outspoken about the furor over special glasses to watch the eclipse, tweeting “Am I crazy for watching the eclipse today w no glasses? I’ve sungazed before and afterwards saw colors for a whole day. I didn’t die tho” and “This ain’t the first solar eclipse and I’m pretty sure our ancestors ain’t have no fancy eyewear. Also pretty sure they ain’t all go blind.” Following the eclipse, Joey cancelled 3 shows, fueling wild speculation that the cancellations were related to his damaging his eyes by watching the eclipse. Joey stoked the rumor mill by appearing days later in glasses he said were prescribed by his doctors to wear in the daylight. The next day, however, he released a video suggesting it had all been a practical joke.

Whatever the case may be, last month, Joey Bada$$ premiered three new songs in one day. Perhaps the best of the trio was “500 Benz,” a Statik Selektah-produced gem from the Brooklyn, New Yorker.

He spits, “Hard to be humble, when you ridin’ with your top down / Picture me rollin’ up in my SL500 Benz / Mami sip on the potion while her hair blowin’ in the wind / I’m just tryna win but they hatin’ from the sideline / These ni**as watch mine like a ni**a prime-time / I’m 10,000 feet right above your skyline / Sippin’ on the fine wine, the only thing on my mind.” The song references a ’95 Mercedes, with all the period-correct jewelry to match.

In the video, Joey brings his verse to life, from the car to the other luxury items. With now two Top 5 albums in the can, the Pro Era front-man is living his best life—much like some of those ’90s MCs that influence him. This is the latest addition to Badmon and Statik’s longstanding chemistry.
