Dave East Sets It Off With A Single That Rings The Alarm (Audio)

Dave East has become one of the most prolific artists of the last five years, especially on the level he has reached. After last year’s Def Jam debut Paranoia: A True Story, Dave kept the momentum going by linking up with DJ Holiday and dropping his Karma mixtape a few months later. If that wasn’t enough, the East Harlem native then kicked off 2018 with P2 (Paranoia 2) and more recently has been dropping several loosies.

“Set It Off,” East’s latest song release, may or may not appear on a future body of work, however, its quality is undeniable. Inspired by the 1996 Crime Action Drama of the same name, the track samples dialogue from “Francesca ‘Frankie’ Sutton” (played by Vivica A. Fox) and “Cleo Sims” (Queen Latifah). The pair plan a second bank robbery, which is one of the central plots of the movie. Dave’s lyrics follow likewise and they’re of the shoot first, ask questions later variety.

“Don’t know what to say I done set it off / Rumors about me I done read ’em all,” he raps, then follows up in his second verse: “We looking for you and your man and the way we going to throw it at him he an extra target / I ain’t into all the extra talking / he riding with you then the TEC will park him / I let a hollow go right in his face, the walked by and acted like I never saw him.”

Buda and Grandz’ use ominous sounds to create the perfect backdrop for Dave East to talk that tough guy Timberland-stomping talk. The single comes just days after East dropped his last song “Peter Pan.”
