Pete Rock Gives A Fantastic Update On The De La Soul Project He & DJ Premier Are Producing

Hip-Hop luminary and Grammy-winning producer/DJ Pete Rock was on hand for the Seattle, Washington Museum of Pop Culture’s grand opening of their new exhibit, Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes. The legendary beat creator was invited to DJ the engagement and was also an honored guest.

While Rock wasn’t conducting interviews at the event, he did walk the red carpet with other notable names like actor James Marsters (Marvel’s The Runaways), veteran comic writer/editor Anne Nocenti (Longshot), and director extraordinaire Kevin Smith. Luckily, Ambrosia For Heads managed to pull “The Chocolate Boy Wonder” aside to ask the question on every Head’s mind: Is the De La Soul album exclusively produced by Pete Rock and DJ Premier really happening?

On Friday (April 20) Pete enthusiastically updated the news. “I just sent [De La Soul] a bunch of beats!” When asked if the project will include any beats where the two iconic producers collaborate, the sometimes-MC revealed, “On the low, it’s kind of like Pete Rock vs. DJ Premier with De La Soul.” This statement, of course, refers to the Versus album the two producers have teased fans with for more than four years.

In the Summer of 2014, De La Soul announced that they were working on a mixtape with Pete Rock and DJ Premier that was tentatively titled Premiem Soul On the Rocks, a play on their names. However, even at that time they were unsure of the exact theme or concept. Then, in December of last year, Premier told the Rap Radar Podcast, “Me and Pete [Rock] is supposed to be doing De La Soul’s next album, just the two of us. Things are being worked out, but that’ll be fun. ‘Cause that’s competition.”

Competition appears to be at the foundation of this concept.

Notably, Pete appeared on De La Soul’s most recent, Grammy-nominated album. The Mount Vernon, New Yorker is on and the Anonymous Nobody video single “Memory of…(US),” featuring Estelle. He also appeared in the video.
