The 1st Peak At The Trayvon Martin Film Is A Powerful Look At The Movement He Launched

JAY-Z is in the midst of promoting his joint album EVERYTHING IS LOVE with his wife Beyoncé. The couple is currently on their On The Run 2 Tour this summer. However, at the same time, the legendary Brooklyn, New York MC is continuing his political initiatives to spread awareness of racial injustice in America.

In 2017, Hov’s Peabody Award-winning documentary mini-series TIME: The Kalief Browder Story dissected the brutal reality of the criminal justice system that wrongfully jailed a young Black teenager who committed suicide after serving three years in New York’s now-defunct Rikers Island prison. Now Jay is following up with a next documentary about the polarizing case of Trayvon Martin, who was tragically gunned down at age 17 by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida on February 26, 2012.

The six-episode documentary mini-series is titled Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story is executive produced by Shawn Carter, and presented by the Paramount Network and BET. It will feature appearances from Reverend Al Sharpton, political activists Angela Rye and Angela Davis, the Martin family lawyer Donald Crump, and more. Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason direct.

The trailer for The Trayvon Martin Story included audio from the Martin’s father filing a missing person report to the Sanford Police Department George Zimmerman’s bloodied face from the alleged fight between himself and Martin on the night of his death. Also featured are subsequent protests of the murder, as well as interview clips from NBA star Carmelo Anthony and Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin (who also serve as producers). The film will also detail the investigation, trial, and subsequent not-guilty verdict of his assailant George Zimmerman.

In the last week, Jay addressed Trayvon’s killer. Late last year, George Zimmerman publicly threatened JAY-Z over the making of this documentary. Specifically, the man implied he would feed the Rap star to an alligator, as reported by The New York Daily News. On Drake’s just-released “Talk Up,” the Roc Nation founder closes his verse with the bars: “I got your President tweetin’, I won’t even meet with him / Y’all killed X and let Zimmerman live,” alluding to the June 18 killing of Florida rapper XXXTentacion.

The film’s first episode airs Monday, July 30 at 10PM EST on BET.
