Who Are The Top 5 MCs Of All-Time? Allen Iverson Has The Answer.

Allen Iverson wrote a lengthy article in the latest edition of The Player’s Tribune (December 6) titled, “Allen.” In the piece, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee covers everything from his connection to Meek Mill, to an anecdote about giving a Bentley to former teammate Larry Hughes, to how Michael Jordan is basketball’s unquestionable GOAT. He also reveals that instead of trash-talking on the court, he would draw unflattering cartoons of those who did him wrong in the paint, post-game. However, the section most likely to pique the interest of many Heads is A.I.’s trio of Top 5 lists.

He starts with his All-Time NBA Starting 5, which he graciously excludes himself from. He lists Steph Curry, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Shaquille O’Neal.

Next, Iverson weighs in on one of the most hotly debated topics in Hip-Hop, the “Top 5 MCs Of All-Time.” The onetime spitter excludes himself from this one, too. The 43-year-old puts Biggie Smalls in the top spot. A.I. and Biggie knew each other, as discussed in a recent Complex conversation. Fellow late MC, Tupac Shakur follows the Notorious B.I.G. on the list. Sadly, Pac was killed just a month before A.I. began in the NBA. OutKast’s Andre 3000, Redman, and JAY-Z round out the list.

While the first, second and fifth selections are to be expected from most any Hip-Hop fan, the inclusion of Andre and Red’ is to be commended, as both lyricists tend to be skipped over in Top 5 lists. Regardless of how much love they get for their music, their mic skills are still underrated. Notably, all five of these artists were dominant during A.I.’s playing career.

Later in the conversation, Allen drops his “Top 5 Movies”: Casino, Hoodlum, Devil In A Blue Dress, Law-Abiding Citizen, and Troy. Heat, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, is excluded from this list as he sees it as a standard-bearer.

It’s worth pointing out that four of the players in his NBA Starting 5 have dabbled with rapping at one time or another: Steph, K.O.B.E., King James, and Shaq-Fu. Although, that shouldn’t surprise anyone, seeing as numerous NBAers have spit bars over the decades.
