Anderson .Paak Helps Flying Lotus’ Sound Soar On A Soulful Collab (Audio)

On 2016’s Malibu Anderson .Paak vowed that he was cooling out on doing features. By that point, the versatile singer, MC, producer, and musician had made key cuts with Dr. Dre, TOKiMONSTA, The Game, MED, and Busdriver, among plenty of others. Between Malibu‘s early ’16 drop and the Grammy nomination to follow, Andy kept his guest output strong. A Tribe Called Quest, ScHoolboy Q, Mac Miller, and Rapsody were recipients of some of Paak’s strongest work.

In 2019, Andy now has his Grammy Award, thanks to “Bubblin.'” More notably, Ventura released less than one month ago, and Paak’s six release with Aftermath Entertainment in six months has him receiving some of his highest acclaim since Malibu and NxWorries’ Yes Lawd!. However, Paak is still in the giving spirit.

Later this month (May 24), Flying Lotus will release Flamagra. The sixth LP from the Los Angeles, California native involves George Clinton, Little Dragon, Solange, Tierra Whack, Thundercat, Denzel Curry, Toro y Moi, Shabazz Palaces, and filmmaker David Lynch. The veteran producer/musician taps Anderson .Paak for “More.”

Paak recounts a reach-out from somebody he used to pine for, but lost interest in since the shift. “Someone hit me the other day for a rendezvous / ‘Long time no see’ was the line she used / Bright eyes, like the lights at the carnival / Held convos, but never held accountable / ‘How’s your Mama Duke? How ya papa doin’?’ / ‘Oh, me? I been freer than the sample food’ / But like a sample loop, around and ’round I move / Until it’s clear, then I’m back to baggin’ bags of loot / Spent years try’na steer both hands on you / ‘Til I finally understood that I was spinnin’ my hoop / Rather spinnin’ my wheels, gettin’ up in my years / But still I feel like a kid when I’m f*ckin’ with you / Young ni**a gotta live, that’s the motto they use / But all them ni**as still live in they mama’s backroom / So I’m back in my stu’, lookin’ up at the stars / When they reminisce over you, my God.” The close of the flashy feature nods to C.L. Smooth with style. Meanwhile, Flying Lotus packs a Funk track with some of the quirky rhythms and accents that have made him a top act for so many fans.
