A Newly Surfaced Jay Electronica Song Revisits His Time With Erykah Badu

Jay Electronica’s first foray into Hip-Hop’s collective eye came twelve years ago in 2007 with his first project, Act I: Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), in which Jay spits for fifteen minutes over music woven from the score to the 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Three years later, in 2010, Electronica signed with JAY-Z’s label, Roc Nation, with promises of releasing his debut studio album, Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn).

To this day, Jay Electronica has yet to release his first Roc Nation project, despite teasing songs with JAY-Z, P Diddy, Prodigy, J. Cole, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Vince Staples, and Common. In the same time, Jay has made multiple false announcements of the album’s completion and forthcoming release on Twitter. All have since been deleted. Most recently, Jay made a cryptic, now removed tweet in 2016 that read, “To all those who have been patient with me and supported me over the years, thank you. And get #Tidal#AreYouWatchingClosely?”

Jay Electronica’s last release came earlier this year alongside Brit-Pop singer, Rosie Lowe, and her single, “The Way.”

Today, yet another Jay Electronica song has surfaced online titled, “Memories & Merlot,” paying homage to his own mother, and the mother of Jay’s daughter, Erykah Badu. Electronica notably had an up and down relationship and a child with the famed artist, and Rich Kidd’s production for the track keenly reflects the poetic and ambient nature of Jay’s heartfelt bars. A picture of both Jay and Erykah captured from a Brooklyn photo shoot between the two with The Keystone Design Union is used as the track’s cover art. About Erykah, Jay divulges, “Summer memories of laying in the grass / My head was spinning and my heart was beating fast / I opened up and start relaying you my past / Who not for thee while I play mine was on the box and Merlot was in the glass / I must admit at first I focused on that a** / But then we chilled and had a blast / So the waves had to crash / But the titans have to clash.”

The single also comes with the caption, “Ruff ruff. Off the long-awaited Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn), dropping September 19th, 2019.” While Jay Electronica has made announcements for the project’s due date before, no official word beyond this caption has been released.
