Before the Madness: Here’s a Previously Unseen Look at “College Dropout-Era” Kanye West (Video)

Earlier this week, Billboard Associate Editor Erika Ramirez made a monster of a story, when she created The Oral History Of Kanye West’s College Dropout. ‘Ye’s debut album, which turns 10 years old soon, featured involvement from Talib Kweli, Freeway, and Consequence, who contributed, as well as Jay Z, Mos Def, Evidence, and others.

The whole piece really honed in on the Kanye West who really was willing to venture all of his earnings to date on himself. Stories go back to Kanye shopping beats to less-than-enthused artists, having slumber party studio sessions at his Newark apartment, and lying to Dame Dash to secure a budget for the would-be game-changing Roc-A-Fella Records debut.

Well, as a bonus to the lengthy read, Erika linked up with Creative Control’s founders to watch some unreleased footage of Kanye West in that time. Coodie and Chike, who did the “Through The Wire” video, recall what Ye’s life was like in that time, and the vision for the video that helped bring non-Heads into the party of the 2000s biggest breakthrough Hip-Hop superstar.
