Dr. Dre Reveals He & Eminem Started Making Their 1st Hit Within Seconds Of Meeting (Video)

Musicians can potentially require an extensive amount of days, weeks, months, or even years to produce a hit record, especially if it is their first. When Dr. Dre met Eminem for the first time in Dre’s Los Angeles home studio, their creative process only needed a matter of seconds to create not just a hit, but a Rap classic.

In a clip from The Defiant Ones, Dre and Eminem immediately noticed their synergy upon the recording of Marshall’s first Top 40 hit “My Name Is.” In the clip, the iconic duo detail their initial circa 1998 meeting. “Eminem comes in, in this bright-yellow f*cking sweatsuit—hoodie, pants, everything,” Dre says about his first encounter with the Detroit MC. “It’s bright f*cking yellow. And I’m like, ‘Wow.'”

Em’ follows with his awestruck impression of the legendary Gangsta Rap producer, “I’m looking at [Dr.] Dre like, ‘Dude, I see you on TV all the time. You’re one of my biggest influences ever in life.'”

After Dre exchanged compliments with Eminem, citing his “incredible” artistry, he says the pair immediately began their work in “Dre’s Crib Studios” after the producer played an instrumental he had previously worked on with a sample from Labi Siffre’s 1975 song “I Got The…”

“I went and I put some samples together, did a couple of things in the drum machine, and I invited him over,” Dre states. “I was like ‘Man, listen. I put this sample together. Tell me if you like it.’ And I hit the drum machine,” Eminem then blurted a salutation upon hearing the beat that Dre cited as too infectious to deny. “Maybe two or three seconds went by and he just went: ‘Hi! My name is…my name is…‘ Like, ‘Yo, Stop! Sh*t’s hot,'” Dre recalls telling Eminem. “That’s what happened our first day in the first few minutes of us being in the studio.”

The resulting album, 1999’s The Slim Shady LP would debut at #2 and go quadruple platinum. The album would set the table for a critical year in Dre’s discography and legacy. After producing Ruthless acts and co-founding Death Row, Eminem helped make Dre’s Aftermath a high profile Rap label.

Their 19-year working relationship has yet to cease. According to an Uproxx interview with The Defiant Ones director Allen Hughes from earlier this month, Eminem and Dr. Dre are back in the studio together working on the iconic Detroit MC’s currently untitled next album.

In case you forgot about Dre’s tireless work ethic, Hughes gave a reminder: “Dre still records. People don’t know this: Dre records every day. Literally, he’s in there recording songs every day. He’s like [Pablo] Picasso in that way. He’s always painting. Right now he’s producing, in the 11th hour, a track for Eminem’s [next] album.”
